ABOUT US

We made the decision to move to an organic system in 1999 as our concerns grew about the impact that conventional farming was having on nature and the wider environment, as well as the quality of the crops we produced. For organic production systems to be sustainable they have to embrace the diversity of natural systems, where balance is found and agrochemicals are not needed.
The further food production moves away from natural systems, the greater the reliance on chemical interventions to maintain an artificial environment, where unsustainably high crop yields and nature cannot coexist.

We have been organic here since 2000, with no field scale applications of pesticides or synthetic fertiliser. The system we introduced back has stayed largely unchanged having proved itself to be sustainable. The cropping rotation varies across the soil types but always includes a period of restorative herbal lay where fertility can be rebuilt, and soil health improved.

In between herbal lays, the main crops we produce are:
Oats
As Organic Arable members, we are proud to supply organic milling oats to White's, a traditional oat miller established in 1841. Oats perform well in organic systems and, with minimal processing, become wonderfully nutritious food.

Peas
Since 2014 we have been supplying organic carlin peas to Hodmedods, a wonderful company based in Suffolk who produce over 100 minimally processed whole foods, all from diverse crops grown in ways that are better for soil, climate and communities.

Wheat and Rye
Our entire wheat and rye area is dedicated to producing specialty milling grain for direct sale to millers and bakers around the UK. Our friendship with the late Prof Martin Wolfe of Wakelyns and Josiah Meldrum of Hodmedods led to an introduction to Kimberley Bell of The Small Food Bakery back in 2016 and a visit by her bakery team to the farm. The impact this visit had on them inspired us to start growing a collection of distinctive wheat varieties and lines, each with different baking qualities and a different story. As far as we know we offer the widest range of milling options from any organic farm in the UK. Enquiries are welcome.
